Having always enjoyed anything creative and
visually attractive over the years, I developed an increasing interest in web
design and what goes on behind the scenes in creating a web site to appeal to a
wide audience and catch viewers’ attention.
Little did I know there was so much involved!
I discovered that there was a course called Web Design with Adobe Dreamweaver taking place in Finglas Training Centre which lasted 17 weeks and covered XHTML/CSS, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Career Planning and Job Seeking Skills which really interested me.
XHTML (Extensible Hyper-Text Mark-up Language) is the computer language designed to enable website creation.
CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is the style language that outlines how HTML elements are to be displayed on screen.
Dreamweaver is a program developed by Adobe Systems to create websites with a user-friendly interface.
Fireworks is another program developed by Adobe Systems to design and edit graphics which assists with creating website prototypes.
In order to take part in the current web design course I am now doing in Finglas Training Centre a person must be creative, efficient and knowledgeable with design principles. Working on your own initiative and as part of a team is very important with an attention to detail and problem solving skills. Experience in graphic editing programs is also an advantage but not a must!
At the beginning of the course it can be quite daunting seeing all the various XHTML codes but our teacher demonstrates step by step with basics while we progress and develop daily with regular exercises to refresh our minds and skills. Moving onto CSS is when all the fun begins and we get to style pages for websites and make them look pretty as some people like to say! This part of the course is when you get to see web pages come to life with some colour or color as XTML spells it!
We have started to plan our own personal portfolio websites to create an online presence for ourselves which I’m sure will all look unique as we each have our own personality and tastes incorporating our own individual styles and layouts. We got to see past students’ online portfolios and it was great to see how different everyone can be and what we will be capable of when we have our own completed which we all look forward to!
We will be learning how to use Fireworks soon which will be another fantastic skill to have and help us with our planning, designing and creation of our websites. Once we’re equipped with all the above skills we will then transfer these to Dreamweaver and see how all our coding works in this web design application. Another aptitude to add to our skill set!
We are also working in groups once a week which is called our company day to plan and develop a website for the class, create relevant content for websites, Facebook and blog posts. This is a great opportunity to interact with ideas and see what we come up with when we work together as a team.
With all that in mind I would definitely recommend this Web Design course to anyone with an interest in this area and I look forward to seeing what will come of it which will include a lot of coding mixed with creativity!
